A four-step path from vulnerability to strength.
Simply rescuing women from traffickers and returning them to their villages does nothing to end their endangerment. JHF provides a comprehensive program that enables women to build a better life for themselves and their families.
Education
Knowledge is the most powerful protection.
The Journey Home Foundation educates villages, women, and girls on the dangers of human trafficking and the ways to avoid it. We expose the hidden agendas behind predatory offers so that women and families are wiser to the realities of this criminal industry and are able to recognize trafficking solicitations.
More importantly, JHF helps girls develop a sense of pride and self-worth so they are less vulnerable and better prepared to protect themselves. We work with communities to strengthen social and cultural bonds and instill a sense of citizenship and purpose.
Education is available to any and all girls, regardless of caste, religion, disability, ethnicity, or political affiliation. We focus on low-caste girls because they are the most vulnerable.
Rescue & Prevention
Safe shelter, legal support, and a path forward.
JHF's Rehabilitation Home in Kathmandu provides refuge for intercepted children and women, survivors of trafficking, abandoned or lost children, and survivors of domestic violence and rape.
Once the Foundation expands its partnerships with other NGOs and nonprofits, JHF will focus on rescuing enslaved girls and women and prosecuting their traffickers. We are also working to create additional shelters and safe houses across Nepal.
Women and girls may take refuge in JHF facilities in Kathmandu as temporary guests while they receive medical support, counseling, and help planning their next steps toward independence.
Vocational Training
Real skills. Real opportunities. Real independence.
Poverty-stricken communities need alternatives. If girls are most valuable as barter for economic gain, human traffickers will always find fertile ground. JHF provides vocational training for both survivors of trafficking and for women and girls at risk.
Textile skills: hands-on training expands simple mending skills to sewing and weaving. Women are trained to be proficient using commercial sewing machines and learn how to promote a sewing business so they will eventually be self-sufficient.
Culinary arts: JHF sponsors a culinary school in Nepal where girls attend three months of training to earn their chef certification. With this certification, graduates find jobs at hotels and lodges serving international travelers — skills that are highly marketable and sustainable in Nepal's large tourism industry.
